Thank you, Yakima County, for making our communities safer!
On Saturday, October 26th 2024, Safe Yakima Valley partnered with local law enforcement and Yakima County Crime Stoppers to host TWO “Shreds & Meds” event. The safe destruction of documents reduces the risk of identity theft and safely discarding unwanted/unused medications reduces the risk of youth experimenting with prescription pills.
In Yakima, we filled a shred truck and collected over 200 pounds of unwanted/unused medications in 4 hours!
We also held our first “Shreds & Meds” event in Grandview and collected over 8 bins of shreds and over 30 pounds of unwanted/unused medications in only 3 hours.
We look forward to seeing you all again in the spring!
Our October 2024 Impact
Over 11,000 pounds of shreds collected
Over 240 pounds of medication collected
200 safety & firearm trigger locks distributed
400 dispose Rx packets distributed
Twice a year, in April and October, Safe Yakima Valley REACH coalition partners with Crime Stoppers and the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office to host a "Shreds & Meds" event. The public is invited to safely drop off their expired or unused medications and drugs, no questions asked. Community members may also bring in their important documents to safely discard minimizing their exposure to identity theft.
Safe Yakima Valley also handed out Dispose Rx packets, drug de-activation packets designed to safely dispose of unused/unwanted medications at home.
Robert Udell, Yakima County Sheriff
“This is a great event for our valley. Getting drugs off of our streets creates safer homes for our families, less crime, and a safer community for our officers.”
Shawn Boyle, Interim Police Chief for the YPD
"Anytime we can get together and help as a group and as a community make this a safer place to live and work and visit, it's a great opportunity for us to partner."
Mark Peterson, President of Yakima County Crime Stoppers.
"I want Yakima to be a great safe place. I love Yakima, Yakima is a cool place, and just making [it] a little bit safer—I think that's what people want, and so get involved in your community,"
